Cause and Effect

Divorce has reached alarming proportions in the United States. Fifty percent of all marriages now end in divorce. Many experts expect a seventy-five percent divorce rate within the next twenty years. What are the causes of divorce and what are its far reaching effects?

Modern stresses make one of the biggest “scapegoats”; we are way too busy. Society says we should have everything, do everything, be everything, and involve our children in every sport, club, and project that blows our way. Trying to live up to these unreal expectations can strain the best of marriages.

Vanity is probably a bigger problem then most people would like to think. “Hollyweird” says we should look young and beautiful forever (stay thin, get a facelift, dye your hair). Getting old? Forget it! Get a divorce instead!

Spouses are not dependent on each other as they once were. Men and women had well-defined roles not too many years ago.

Men worked for the paycheck; women worked to run the household: a positively meshed, well-synchronized machine that worked well for many families and for many years. Times change and budgets squeezed; people learn to take care of themselves out of necessity. Families may rarely see each other. Spouses grow apart…..

Society doesn’t expect us to stay married. Divorce once considered taboo–now is acceptable–even appropriate. People no longer fear being shunned by society as the divorcee; some even consider it a desirable alternative. Today while driving, I heard the radio DJ talking about how much fun her divorce party was last night. Only one of my eyebrows went up. A few years ago she may have caused a wreck! WE GET USED TO  IT!

Declining morals have taken their toll. Affairs are rampant, and it’s easier than ever to find a new mate (lots of divorcees!). Again “Hollyweird” reflects society and society reflects “Hollyweird.” Mountains of money are made selling sex, porn, and debauchery. We are paying the price.

The price we are paying is too high! The monetary price does not deserve attention. Kids without direction are running the streets. Our prisons are filling faster than we can build them. Sexually transmitted diseases are killing millions of guilty, and innocent, human beings–good,  sad, poor–human beings………..©
